'Out now: impulsiv 137'

The impulsiv issue 137 is now available in the MI Magistrale. This issue’s topic is “Movies”. You will learn more about movie festivals around Munich, movie soundtracks, the technology that is used and get an impression of what happens behind the scenes of the tufilm. Probably you will want to have a movie night after reading, so we also provide you with some movie recommendations from the student council. As the new Mensa is finally opened, we took a look behind the scenes there in cooperation with the Reisswolf, the mechanical engineering student council’s magazine.

(In)Accessibility in the MI building?

(In)Accessibility in the MI building?

In our university you can encounter various barriers in everyday life. In the older buildings for example, there are no resources to help students with impairment. These include missing Voice announcements in the elevators, broken door openers and floating stairs in the MI building. But also during lectures you can be confronted with challenges. Poorly chosen colours, red laser pointers, acoustics/noise levels, scripts that are not barrier-free, etc. can all be a challenge.

Ein verspieltes Ende

Ein verspieltes Ende

It’s that time of the year again, the semester is coming to an end and with it our weekly game night in the MI Magistrale. This semester, we were once again pleased to welcome numerous players who gathered every Monday to fight a new battle, experience the last hours on earth, solve puzzles or learn each other’s most private secrets. A game between kings Fun decoding with Codenames Computer scientists go full risk Somehow the games have to get into the Magistrale, too.

Stargazing at the physics faculty

Stargazing at the physics faculty

It’s an old and obviously completely wrong prejudice against mathematicians and computer scientists that they don’t like to leave their house. That they should do just that every now and then is proven by our next event: On Tuesday the 16th of July from 6:30 p.m. until the last train around 2 a.m., the very first Astro Night is happening at the physics department! Listen to one of two interesting talks about everything star-related by Prof.

Pen and Paper Abend

Pen and Paper Abend

On Tuesday evening, 2.7, was again the monthly Pen and Paper evening. Again, many (there were really many) brave heroes have gathered to create the evil out of the world. Or rather, I think one group freed the god of death from his shackles… Again, there were some newcomers to get excited about the incredible worlds of PnP. Six masters took players into Dungeon and Dragons, Nightshift, Vampire the Masquerade and other game systems.

What's all that noise?

Today we would like to present another division, which usually only appears in the background. The Computer Unit, which takes care of the administration and maintenance of the Student Council’s IT. The administrators are organized in the computer department or Compref for short. Among them are experienced system administrators, some of whom do not study anymore, but are always there with help and advice. Our servers are located in the Maths Informatics building.

'Garnix' going on here at 'Tunix'

'Garnix' going on here at 'Tunix'

As you may have noticed last week, the Garnix took place right in front of the MI building. Ruhig und Entspannt … … gemütlich in den Sonnenuntergang … Aber auch mal ganz viel los. Who doesn’t know the Garnix yet: Every year a student festival including music, barbecue and beer takes place on the Garching campus. But what you may not know yet: the Garnix is only the little brother of the Tunix.

The press is running - again

The press is running - again

One or the other may have seen (some weeks ago) the empty shelves in the lecture notes sales office. But the problem is not that we don’t want to print new scripts - we couldn’t. Our beloved printer had (yet) another problem. This time the printed pages are very blurry and you can hear a high-pitched whistle from the machine. As you may already know from the last blog entry, we have a service contract for the printer: that means a technician is available on call, for exactly such cases.

Cleaning out the safe

Cleaning out the safe

Soon we will be hosting a big event: the Unity. For our financial department, this also means making room for change. Through the many board game evenings and other events the coins quickly accumulate, especially the small coins. These are particularly impractical at an event, but take up a lot of space in our safe. Our bank offers us a vending machine, where you can insert the coins and then it pleasurably jingles.

Maintenance for our printer

Maintenance for our printer

The new semester is about to start, which means one thing for our printing department: we have to print the new lecture notes in order for them to be available on time for you. As we have to print a lot of pages (which is not possible with an ordinary office printer) we own an production-grade printing machine. Our printer is a Canon VarioPrint 110, but it’s broken and prints multiple nasty stripes all over every page.

3D printed spare wheel for our dishwasher

3D printed spare wheel for our dishwasher

Recently, a guidance wheel of our dishwasher went missing. This led to the tray of the dishwasher getting out of control if in movement. Clearly, we needed a solution. Luckily, we own two Ultimaker 2 and a Formlabs Form 2. Therefore, printing spare parts is no problem. We hit up the 3D printing division and got cracking. A short search for “Siemens dishwasher” on Thingiverse led to results. We therefore had the model, the next step was to print the wheel.
